Have new license keys to apply to the new environment for both the VCenter server and the hosts.ĭo the 5.5 hosts maintain their 5.5 license, or do they revert to evaluation mode (or worse)? Upgrade my license to 6.0 in MyVMWare then the 5.5 license is replaced and I With no issue, but I am not sure if this applies to Essentials. My understanding of VCenter 6 is that it can manage hosts running 5.5 My question / concern is then: what happens to the licenses of the 5.5 hosts? Apply license keys in VCenter 6 and to the 6.0 host. Upgrade license in MyVMWare from 5 to 6.Ħ. Shutdown/decomission the 5.5 VCenter server (which at this point should not see any hosts).ĥ. Remove/decommission the old host, add the two other 5.5 hosts in VCenter 6.Ĥ.

There should be a message that it is already being managed by another server, just hit OK to take it.ģ. In the 6.0 VCenter, add the 5.5 host that I want to decommission. My next steps are (please correct me if wrong):ġ. I don't want to start this process and then get to a point where I am forced to upgrade the old hosts if I am not ready for it. My long term goal is to get all of the hosts running 6.0U3 by buying new servers to replace the old ones.

My current short-term goal is to bring the new environment up with 1 host running 6.0U3 and 2 hosts still running 5.5U2, migrating VMs off of one of the old 5.5 hosts to the new 6.0 host.
VMWARE VCENTER DOWNLOAD 5.5 EVALUATION INSTALL
We have a new host running ESXi 6.0U3 with a fresh install of 6.0U3 VCenter server already set up on it and ready to go, currently running with evaluation licenses.

Our operational environment consists of 3 hosts running ESXi 5.5U2 with a VCenter server with an Essentials license, have around 100 total VMs. I am preparing to upgrade our small business VMWare environment from 5.5U2 Essentials to 6.0U3 Essentials and am just looking for some input.
